“We wouldn’t be the first life form to wipe itself out; but what would be unique about us is that we did it knowingly.” -
Released in 2012, Cubic Nomad’s second album marked a massive extension of the project’s musical range, departing from hard rhythmic or dance floor-bound sounds altogether: Earth 2 is a straight downbeat album, working mostly with shuffling trip-hop beats, albeit an a most tense, dark mood, according to the aggravating subject matter.
Using documentary snippets extensively, “Earth 2” is an urgent call for eco-awareness, with a gloomy outlook. Very electronic-sounding, dominated by a desolate, dark atmosphere, it manages to take the listener on a journey around our dying world. Emma Susanne makes her first appearance as the voice of short recitals; two collaborations represent the opposing ends of this album: “Jupiter”, together with Croatian producer Xtematic, is pure beatless ambience, while German act Embrionyc contributes to the most plaintive, beat-heavy tune “Le Futur”. A seamless, flawless body of work, you just can’t shrug off the album’s inherent warning – or escape the fascination of its sinister sound.
