Russian producer Maza has been much of a busy bee lately, with a string of releases that keep well off the beaten path and regularly feature various collaborations. On „Vendetta“ he again welcomes guests on six of the eight tracks – and surprises us with a pretty consistent dance floor-bound crossbreed vibe.
Unpretentious melodies in combination with a massive rolling bass and hard stabs have been a staple of hard drum’n’bass music since its inception – and the formula still works, with Maza offering an updated interpretation. Despite all the different collaborators, this is an almost monolithic album, with only a certain stepping-up of the kicks throughout. Percussive and raw, “Vendetta” is nevertheless strangely accessible, mostly for its melodic ability, maybe at its most intense peak on “The Darkness” – which is, well, very dark indeed. Whether you’re looking for some noise (“Pythoness”), a distinct hardcore vibe (“Critical Energy”), or some tasty drumstep flavor (“Hypnotize”), there’s something to be found here for everyone!
