Shatterling is a producer from Finland who could obviously care less about genres and related preconceptions. Whereas melodies in hardcore are often either ostentatious or sugar-coated simple, his refer to the aesthetics of electro pop, coupled with hearty beats and playful sound design. Stalin would have called it a crossbreed of pig and monkey – and wouldn’t you just like to check that out?
If you have ever wondered how a Massive Attack instrumental would sound with pounding 130 beats per minute – the opener “Waking World” will show you. A Depeche Mode melody with distorted darkcore beats – that’s “Just a Second”. You can also attend the tongue-in-cheek history lesson of “Archeotech” or shake to the breakbeats of “The Tale” or “Pyromechanics VIP”. For good measure, Shatterling has also included three tracks from his alias Insectoid in Isolation (a tough contender for the top 10 of the coolest band names ever), which are even heavier on the pop appeal with chunky IDM beats. “Masterpiece” is what future pop would sound if it was any good, and the closing title “Wanderlust” is an amazingly tight combination of a lush female vocal with build-up hardcore beat patterns.
Not for the narrow-minded, this is a heartfelt recommendation for those who wish to submerge into the world of Shatterling, a hardcore-minded New Romantic.
